Before I was running a business, my business was running me. Sadly, I didn't even know I had a business, I thought I was just a hairstylist. The first few years of my hairstylist career, I spent going from salon to salon trying to figure this hair career thing out.
At each salon, I learned some important things:
The first two salons I worked at I booth rented. The first salon I booth rented for around sixty days. I left because I thought the location was wrong. It was in the back of a beauty supply store and I wasn’t really ready to be marketing my business. After deciding to leave the second booth rent salon after about sixty days, I learned that booth renting wasn't for me at that time in my career and I wasn’t ready for life as a booth renter.
The third salon I worked for was a corporate salon that was commission based and I worked there about sixty days. It came with lots of restrictions and it taught me that I didn’t want to be restricted in my artistry by only being allowed to provide services that the brand allowed.
The forth salon was a commission based fifty dollar weave salon that taught me I wasn’t about that cheap service life and I wanted something different for my business but didn’t know what. I remained at that salon around twelve months.
By the time I reached my fifth salon, I was more intentional about my salon selection. I had more direction of where I saw myself going in my hairstyling career. I knew I wanted to have a diverse clientele and offer a variety of hair extension services. This salon taught me a variety of hair extension service and gave me a glimpse into what it looks like to properly run a beauty business. But the business was just dead slow there and after two years I said it's a wrap.
When I reached the sixth salon, it taught me that I had finally figured most things out for my business. I finally had a grasp on how I wanted to run it. It taught me that everyone in the industry is not customer oriented and working with other hairstylist wasn’t necessarily a benefit. At this point, my mindset was focused on building a business culture while others inside that salon was just into doing hair. I knew at some I would need to branch out on my own, if I didn't find a salon that had an atmosphere that I desired to run my business inside of.
This landed me to my salon suite, which I've now had for over seven years. Being a suite owner has taught me that I learned a lot from my previous career experiences and that I was heading down the right path in business. All the trainings, books, and coaching I've received along the way is paying off. The investments I made in my career early on and the ones that I continue to make is what keeps my business growing and thriving.
By now you know, there is more to a hairstylist career to just doing hair if you want to continue to grow and succeed!
Developing your business mind and skill set is just as important to helping you advance in your career as it is to acquiring technical skills. Making investments into strengthening your mind will help you to trust decisions that you make for yourself and your business. It will help you to better "stand on business"!
Investing in building your business skill set can position you to enhance customer experiences, automate processes within your business, reduce business expenses, increase revenue, produce more revenue streams and more.
Making investments in building my business skill set and mindset is what took me from barely making 5 figures a year, my first year as a hairstylist to having 5 figure months.
I started making smart moves for my business, that I was afraid to make before. It is what helped me to sit down with my pricing structure to raise my price to yield the profits my business needed to make. I was able to remove the fear of losing my clientele to higher prices, because my business mind was shifted into knowing that losing customers or clients is a part of the business process.
My business skill sets in learning about target audiences, how to run Facebook Ads, and how to build an attractive website, provided me with the tools needed to attract a demographic that would pay my premium rates and enjoy the customer experience my business have. The business skill sets that I've acquired is what help me lower my business expenses because I don't have to hire someone to perform every job in my business. It allows me to get my business projects rolling faster not having to rely on someone for every little thing.
